The Test Routes - What You Can Expect
When driving through Ubi and surrounding areas, you will encounter a variety of road types. Each is designed to assess different aspects of your driving ability, from handling traffic in residential areas to navigating complex junctions and expressways. Here's what to expect:
Route 01: KPE
Route 02: Ubi Avenue 3
Route 03: Eunos Link
Residential Roads
You'll be driving through quieter residential areas with narrow lanes and slower speed limits. Roads like Ubi Avenue 1 and Ubi Avenue 2 are typical examples, where you'll need to carefully navigate parked cars, give way to pedestrians at crossings, and manage tight turns.Industrial Roads
The Ubi area is home to several industrial zones, such as Ubi Road 1 and Ubi Road 3, where you may encounter larger vehicles like lorries or trucks. These roads are typically wider, but the traffic can be busier during working hours.Major Arterial Roads
Main roads such as Paya Lebar Road and Eunos Link are busier routes with multiple lanes, traffic lights, and junctions. Here, you'll be expected to perform lane changes, handle merging traffic, and follow traffic signals at major intersections.Expressways
Some test routes may take you onto an expressway, such as the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) or the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). On expressways, you’ll need to show your ability to merge smoothly into fast-moving traffic, maintain lane discipline, and safely exit at the correct junction.
Common Test Elements
Along your route you will likely encounter a number of features that will need to be navigated safely and confidently. These are some of the most common scenarios (and where you might encounter them):
Junctions and Intersections
You'll encounter simple traffic light-controlled junctions to more complex multi-lane intersections, such as the junction at Ubi Avenue 2 and Paya Lebar Road. You’ll be tested on your ability to anticipate traffic light changes, make safe turns, and handle lane positioning accurately while keeping an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.Pedestrian Crossings
You’ll come across pedestrian crossings, including zebra crossings and signalized crossings. Roads like Ubi Avenue 1 are known for having frequent pedestrian activity. You’ll be expected to slow down, check for pedestrians, and give way where necessary.Slip Roads and Merging Lanes
You may also encounter slip roads or merging lanes, especially when transitioning from smaller roads onto larger arterial roads or expressways. For example, when merging from Ubi Avenue 4 onto PIE or KPE, you must demonstrate the ability to merge smoothly by checking your blind spots and signaling appropriately.
Challenges Around Bukit Batok
Heavy Traffic in Industrial Areas: Industrial roads like Ubi Road 1 are often busy with large vehicles. You’ll need to maintain safe distances and stay alert for slow-moving traffic or trucks loading and unloading.
Multi-Lane Roads: Main roads such as Paya Lebar Road and Eunos Link have multiple lanes, requiring careful lane changes and awareness.
Frequent Junctions and Traffic Lights: Busy intersections along Ubi Avenue 2 require smooth stops and proper timing at traffic lights.
Expressway Merging: Entering and exiting expressways like the KPE can be challenging. You’ll need to merge with fast-moving traffic.
Heavy Traffic at Peak Hours: Congested roads such as Paya Lebar Road will test your ability to stay calm, maintain lane discipline.
Roadworks and Diversions: Temporary roadworks or diversions on Ubi Avenue 4 will require you to follow road signs carefully.
The CDC Circuit Course
The Circuit Course at CDC is designed to test essential driving skills in a safe, controlled environment before heading onto public roads.
Requirements
Slope Test: Demonstrate stopping and starting on an incline without rolling back, using proper control of the brakes and accelerator.
S-Course & Crank Course: Navigate tight curves and sharp turns to test steering accuracy and vehicle control.
Parking: Practise both Parallel and Vertical Parking, focusing on precision and safe manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Emergency Brake: Perform a sudden stop safely and within a short distance, simulating a real-life emergency scenario.
Directional Change: Execute a three-point turn in a confined area, testing your ability to control the car in reverse and tight spaces.
Advice
Be sure to check mirrors and blind spots frequently throughout both the Circuit Course and Practical Test, as failure to do so can lead to penalties.

Tips for Driving Around Ubi and Surrounding Areas
Ubi can present unique challenges to learners, so to help you navigate the area confidently, here are some key tips for a successful drive:
Familiarise Yourself with the Area
Practise driving around the Ubi test routes, particularly on roads like Ubi Avenue 1, Ubi Road 1, and Paya Lebar Road. Knowing the area well will help reduce anxiety and improve your ability to anticipate road conditions.
Stay Calm in Industrial Traffic
Ubi is an industrial hub, so you may encounter heavy vehicles such as trucks and lorries, especially on roads like Ubi Road 3. Maintain a safe distance and drive cautiously.
Multi-Lane Junctions
Major roads like Eunos Link and Paya Lebar Road have busy multi-lane intersections. Be sure to stay in the correct lane and prepare well in advance for turns.
Watch Your Speed
Always check for speed limit signs, especially on quieter roads like Ubi Avenue 2 and busier roads like Paya Lebar Road, where limits can change along the route.
Lane Changes and Merging
On roads like Paya Lebar Road, traffic can be heavy. Signal early, check your mirrors, and make sure the lane is clear before merging, especially during peak traffic hours.
Handling Expressways
If your test involves expressway driving, be prepared for fast-moving traffic on the KPE or PIE. Ensure you accelerate smoothly when merging and maintain proper lane discipline.
Pedestrian Activity
On residential roads like Ubi Avenue 1, pedestrians may cross unexpectedly, so slow down near pedestrian crossings and always be prepared to stop if necessary.
Peak Hour Traffic Preparation
Roads like Ubi Avenue 4 and Paya Lebar Road can become congested. Stay patient, avoid rushing, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
